Every Cross Country customer can choose to make a voluntary native forest regeneration contribution through Trees That Count. The option is available during the additional-fees stage of the booking process on all hires, with the final contribution calculated using the vehicle category and actual kilometres travelled.

Every Cross Country customer can choose to make a voluntary contribution to our partner, Trees That Count, to help fund native forest restoration across Aotearoa New Zealand. The option is available during the additional-fees stage of the booking process on all hires, with the final contribution calculated using the vehicle category and actual kilometres travelled.
Add an environmental contribution at booking
Select Native Impact during the additional-fees stage of your booking.
Complete your hire
The final distance travelled is recorded when the hire is completed.
Calculate the contribution
Actual kilometres are multiplied by the carbon cost per kilometre for the vehicle category.
Support native planting
Native Impact contributions are donated to Trees That Count for native tree planting.

Our native forest regeneration contribution scheme gives customers a straightforward way to support native forest regeneration in Aotearoa New Zealand through their vehicle hire. Built on three simple principles- clear information, voluntary participation, and a local contribution. The programme is designed to be transparent and easy to understand. It does not suggest that travel has no environmental impact, nor does it attempt to mitigate every kilometre travelled. Instead, it provides our customers with a way to make a positive contribution that is directly linked to their journey.
All contributions are donated to Trees That Count. Trees That Count connects funding with native forest regeneration projects across New Zealand, helping restore ecosystems, improve biodiversity, and support long-term environmental outcomes in the communities where we live, work, and travel. By keeping contributions local and providing a clear connection between customer participation and native forest regeneration, Native Impact offers a practical and meaningful way for customers to support a greener future for Aotearoa.
The calculation uses the emissions value for the booked vehicle category and a carbon value. The resulting cost per kilometre is applied to the actual distance travelled at the end of the hire.
Published vehicle data
Where manufacturers publish combined-cycle CO₂ emissions figures, we use those values when calculating emissions. If a range is provided, we use the upper figure as a conservative basis. This helps ensure a consistent approach across the fleet while relying on recognised vehicle data published by manufacturers.
Fuel-use estimates
Where suitable published CO₂ data is unavailable, emissions are estimated from fuel consumption. We use recognised conversion factors for petrol and diesel vehicles to calculate an estimated emissions value. This ensures every vehicle category can be included within Native Impact using a consistent and transparent methodology.
Actual distance travelled
Contributions are based on the actual kilometres travelled during the completed hire, not an estimated booking distance. This means the final contribution reflects the real journey undertaken by the customer. Using actual distance helps keep the calculation fair, accurate, and directly linked to vehicle use.
$100 per Tonne?
We use a carbon value of $100 per tonne of CO₂e to calculate Native Impact contributions. While New Zealand carbon prices have recently traded at lower levels, we have chosen a higher value to create a more meaningful contribution towards native forest regeneration and restoration projects throughout New Zealand.
These examples use current vehicle values and show how contributions are calculated using actual kilometres travelled. They are indicative only and may change if vehicle data, assumptions or the carbon value are updated.
WEEKEND TRAVEL
Compact Car Journey
A Suzuki Swift Mild Hybrid is used for a weekend away.
Distance: 500 km Estimated emissions: 48.5 kg CO2e Native Impact: $4.85
FAMILY HOLIDAY
SUV Road Trip
A Mitsubishi ASX is used for a longer regional journey.
Distance: 1,250 km Estimated emissions: 245 kg CO2e Native Impact: $24.50

Native habitats
Native planting can help restore habitat for birds, insects and other wildlife.
Waterways and erosion
Planting can help stabilise land, reduce erosion and support healthier waterways.
Long-term resilience
Native planting supports stronger, more resilient natural landscapes.
Community engagement
Projects can involve communities, iwi, schools, landowners and restoration groups.
A New Zealand contribution
We direct customer contributions to a New Zealand-based native forest regeneration.

Voluntary
Our environmental contribution is optional and selected by the customer.
Estimated emissions
Emissions are estimated using the configured vehicle-category value and completed-hire distance.
Not a substitute for reduction
Contributions sits alongside efficient planning, maintenance and responsible fleet decisions.
No automatic carbon-neutral claim
This program must not be described as independently verified carbon neutrality unless supported by an approved verification framework.
Values may change
Vehicle data, fuel assumptions and the carbon value may be reviewed over time.
Native Impact is Cross Country’s voluntary customer contribution programme supporting native tree planting through Trees That Count.
Yes. The option is available during the additional-fees stage of the booking process on all hires.
At the end of the hire using the actual kilometres travelled.
The vehicle category’s CO2 g/km value is multiplied by the $100 per tonne carbon value and divided by 1,000,000.
Native Impact contributions are donated to Trees That Count at the end of each quarter.
No. It is a voluntary option.
No automatic carbon-neutral claim is made. Native Impact supports native tree planting through a voluntary contribution.
The emissions value is estimated from fuel consumption using the relevant petrol or diesel fuel factor.
No. Trailer emissions are included within the towing vehicle emissions factor.
