Cover in action

Here’s how different cover options can affect what you may need to pay if something unexpected happens during your hire.

Minor accident

You accidentally scrape a bollard while parking. The repair cost is $2,549.50.

  • Basic Cover: You are responsible for the repair. $2,549.50 is charged
  • Superior Cover: You have reduced liability. $1,000 is charged.
  • Max Cover: Your liability is $0.

A larger accident

Your rental vehicle is involved in an accident, causing damage to multiple vehicles. The total repair cost is $18,497.00.

  • Basic Cover: Your liability is limited. $3,000 or $5,000 is charged.
  • Superior Cover: Your liability is reduced. $1,000 is charged.
  • Max Cover: Your liability is $0.

A crack in the windscreen

A stone strikes the windscreen while travelling, and it needs replacing. The repair cost is $1,105.78.

  • Basic Cover: Windscreen damage is not included. $1,105.78 is charged.
  • Superior Cover: Windscreen Cover is not included. $1,000 is charged.
  • Windscreen Cover: Removes windscreen liability. $0.00 is charged.
  • Max Cover: Includes windscreen cover. $0.00 is charged.

A tyre is damaged

You pick up a nail while driving, and the tyre goes flat. You need roadside assistance, and the tyre needs repair or replacement. The tyre costs $420.00, and the roadside callout fee is $140.00

  • Basic Cover: Tyre punctures/damage are not included. $560.00 is charged.
  • Superior Cover: Tyre punctures/damage are not included. $560.00 is charged.
  • Max Cover: Tyre punctures/damage and roadside assistance are included. $0.00 is charged.
What happens if

Someone else damages the vehicle

You return to your vehicle and discover damage to the vehicle. There is no note left behind, no witness, and no way to identify who caused the damage.

From a coverage perspective, the damage still occurred while the vehicle was in your care. Because the person responsible cannot be identified, their insurer cannot be pursued for the repair costs.

In this situation:

  • With Basic Cover, your liability would be up to the applicable liability limit for the vehicle you rented.
  • With Superior Cover, your liability would be limited to $1,000.
  • With Max Cover, your liability would be $0 for covered damage.

This is one of the most common reasons customers choose additional cover. Many people assume they will only be responsible if they personally cause an accident, but rental vehicle cover also applies to situations where damage occurs while the vehicle is parked and the responsible party cannot be identified.

EXCLUSIONS

What is not covered

Our cover options can reduce what you may need to pay if something goes wrong, but there are some situations where cover won’t apply.

These exclusions are important, so please take a moment to understand them before you drive. If an exclusion applies, you may be responsible for the full cost of any damage, loss or associated charges.

  • Driving on unsealed roads, except for approved vehicle types
  • Roof or underbody damage
  • Unapproved drivers
  • Ride-share use
  • Incorrect fuel or exhaust additives
  • Lost keys
  • Smoking or open-flame damage
  • Ignoring warning lights or mechanical alerts
  • Improper use of accessories such as snow chains
